What the Fine Art Photography Workshop at Umami Atelier Looks Like

Ivan Mijatović

Visual Artist & Founder

The Fine Art Photography Workshop at Umami Atelier is a three-month program for people who photograph seriously and want to develop a visual language that is genuinely their own. It runs once a week, in a group of no more than six participants, in the atelier space in Belgrade.

The small group is not incidental. Critical dialogue, close attention to individual work, and the kind of feedback that actually changes how a person sees all require a specific kind of intimacy. A group of six makes that possible in a way that a larger format does not.

What the program covers

The curriculum moves through composition, light, color, and concept in sequence, building each layer on the previous one. The early sessions establish a technical and perceptual foundation. The later sessions shift toward the development of a personal body of work, a coherent series of images built around a specific idea.

Practical work and analysis of photographs run throughout the program. Participants bring their own work. It is looked at closely, discussed with precision, and returned to over multiple sessions. The goal is not to produce a portfolio of technically correct images. It is to develop a consistent way of seeing and expressing.

Who the workshop is for

The workshop is for people who already photograph and feel that something is missing from their work. They have developed technical competence. Their images are sharp, correctly exposed, and well composed. And yet the photographs feel empty, like records of what was in front of the camera rather than expressions of anything in particular.

It is also for people who have not yet started but think in images, who are drawn to photography not as a hobby but as a way of articulating something they observe about the world around them.

Prior experience with a camera is useful. Prior experience with fine art photography is not required.

What the workshop is not

It is not a course in camera operation, editing software, or post-processing techniques. Those skills can be developed elsewhere and are not the focus here. The workshop addresses the question that technical training does not: what to do with the tools once you have them, and how to make images that carry something real.

The structure of each session

Sessions combine instruction, discussion, and critical review of participant work. Each session introduces a concept and places it in a wider context, drawing on photography, painting, film, and other visual disciplines. The practical component requires participants to work with the concept between sessions and bring the results back for collective review.

The progression across three months is cumulative. By the final sessions, the focus has shifted entirely to the development of individual work, with each participant building toward a coherent series.

When and where

The workshop takes place at Umami Atelier, Cetinjska 32, Belgrade. New cycles begin in January, April, July, and October. Each cycle runs for three months. Places are limited to six participants per cycle.
